Your child's first dental visit: why by age one

The first dental check should happen by the first birthday or when the first tooth appears. Here's what happens and how to make it easy.

Your child's first dental visit: why by age one

Why so early

A first visit by age one lets us spot early decay, feeding habits and tongue or lip ties before they cause problems, and gives you personalised guidance on brushing, fluoride and diet. It also builds a friendly, fear-free relationship with the clinic from the start.

What actually happens

A first visit is short and gentle — we count and look at the teeth with your child on your lap, check for decay and soft-tissue issues, discuss feeding and brushing, and apply fluoride varnish if appropriate. There is no drilling and no scary instruments.

How to prepare

Book at a time your child is rested and fed, avoid using scary words like 'needle' or 'hurt', and read a simple book about the dentist together beforehand. Bring a comfort item and stay relaxed — your child reads your cues more than anything we say.
