Why twenty-two hours a day really matters

5 September 2026 · 4 min read

Aligner wear time is not a guideline, it is the mechanism. Here is what happens when hours are missed.

Why twenty-two hours a day really matters

How aligners move teeth

Each aligner applies light, continuous pressure that remodels the bone around a tooth root. Bone needs sustained force over many hours; short bursts do not trigger the same biological response.

The cost of missed hours

At sixteen hours a day, teeth move more slowly and can partly relapse between wears, so the next aligner no longer fits. That mismatch often means extra scans, extra aligners and months of added treatment.

Practical habits that work

Remove aligners only for meals and drinks other than water, set a phone reminder for reinsertion, and use a bright case that is hard to lose in a school bag or on a canteen table.
